Aien Amri Launches Initiative to Plant 1 Million Moringa Trees in Northeast » MokokchungTimes.com – texasagpress

What began as a college student’s passionate advocacy for climate change has blossomed into a significant environmental movement, spearheaded by Aien Amri. With her ambitious Climate Action 2025 project, Amri aims to plant 1 million Moringa trees across Northeast India, building on the success of planting 105,000 Moringa seeds in Nagaland earlier this year. This initiative not only highlights the importance of reforestation but also emphasizes the role of community engagement in combating climate change.

The Genesis of a Movement

Aien Amri’s environmental journey commenced in 2020 when she founded Nature, Pets Guardian (NPG) in Nagaland alongside a group of like-minded individuals. Initially, the organization focused on planting flowers and Moringa trees in Mokokchung while raising awareness about climate action. The group’s grassroots efforts laid the foundation for what would become a larger movement, as they sought to educate their community about the pressing issues of climate change and environmental degradation.

Expanding Horizons: The Global Campaign for Peace Education

In 2021, Amri and her team took their efforts to the next level by participating in the Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE), introduced to them by Dr. Leban Serto and coordinated globally by Dr. Tony Jenkins. Their initial goal was to plant 10,000 Moringa trees in Southeast Asia. However, the response was overwhelming; in the first year alone, they planted over 50,000 trees. The following year saw another 50,000 trees planted across various countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, and even South Africa, in collaboration with Mariana Price’s Shine Africa Campaign.

The Power of Moringa

When asked about the choice of Moringa trees for this initiative, Amri highlighted their significant health benefits and their ability to regenerate soil, making them ideal for soil conservation. Moringa trees are often referred to as “miracle trees” due to their nutritional value and resilience. They thrive in diverse environments and can help combat soil erosion, making them a perfect candidate for reforestation efforts in Northeast India.

A Collaborative Effort

The Climate Action 2025 project is not a solo endeavor; it involves collaborations with various organizations, including the North East India Christian Council (NEICC), ADC Jorhat, Oriental Theological College, Hope Academy in Dimapur, and ETC Jorhat. This year, the project will also partner with Team PETA to educate the public about the impact of climate change and the importance of sustainable practices. These partnerships are crucial for amplifying the message and ensuring that the initiative reaches a wider audience.

A Grassroots Movement

A significant milestone for the campaign occurred in January 2024 when the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) joined the effort. The council procured 24 kg of high-quality Moringa seeds and distributed them across Nagaland, leading to the successful plantation of 105,000 seeds. This initiative, led by NBCC’s General Secretary Rev. Zelhou Keyho and Youth Secretary Rev. Suhoto Chishi, has been recognized as a grassroots climate action effort, showcasing the power of community involvement in addressing environmental challenges.

Educating for a Sustainable Future

Amri’s vision extends beyond mere tree planting; she aims to educate people on the importance of Moringa trees and their potential to regenerate soil and improve dietary health. “We hope to encourage every household in Nagaland to grow at least one Moringa tree,” Amri stated. This educational component is vital for fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship within the community.

Looking Ahead: A Greener Future

With Climate Action 2025, Aien Amri envisions a greener future for Northeast India. Her dedication to environmental advocacy serves as an inspiration for communities to engage in sustainable initiatives. By planting Moringa trees and promoting awareness about climate change, Amri is not only contributing to reforestation efforts but also empowering individuals to take action in their own lives.

In conclusion, Aien Amri’s journey from a college student advocating for climate change to a leader of a large-scale environmental movement exemplifies the power of grassroots activism. Through collaboration, education, and a commitment to sustainability, the Climate Action 2025 project is poised to make a significant impact on the environment and the communities of Northeast India. As Amri continues to inspire others, her vision for a greener future becomes increasingly attainable.
