In the wake of the global pandemic, 2021 marked a pivotal year for environmental advocacy in Southeast Asia. The Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) launched an ambitious initiative to plant over 10,000 Moringa trees across the region. As an advisor from India, I had the privilege of being part of this transformative journey, collaborating with local organizations like Natures, Pets Guardian (NPG) in Nagaland. This article recounts the remarkable progress we made and the profound impact of the Moringa tree on our communities.
The Genesis of the Moringa Campaign
The campaign began under the guidance of Dr. Tony Jenkins, who has coordinated the GCPE since 1999. Dr. Leban Serto introduced us to this global movement, igniting our passion for advocating the Moringa tree, often referred to as the “miracle tree” due to its numerous health benefits. As I delved deeper into the significance of Moringa, I realized its potential not only for nutrition but also for fostering peace and sustainability in our societies.
Our initial goal was modest: to plant 10,000 Moringa trees in Southeast Asia. However, the enthusiasm and commitment of our team led to an astonishing outcome. In our first year alone, we planted over 50,000 Moringa trees across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and even South Africa, thanks to the efforts of Mariana Price and her Shine Africa Campaign.
The Role of NBCC and Community Engagement
A significant milestone in our journey was the involvement of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), which took the lead in expanding our efforts. Starting in January 2024, the NBCC set an ambitious target to grow 105,000 Moringa seeds across Nagaland. They procured 24 kg of high-quality seeds, distributing them to various associations throughout the state. This initiative, set to be officially announced on May 18, 2024, represents a local organic initiative aimed at climate action and community engagement.
Under the leadership of Rev. Zelhou Keyho, General Secretary of NBCC, and Rev. Suhoto Chishi, Youth Secretary, this campaign aims to educate the public about the importance of the Moringa tree. By encouraging households to plant at least one Moringa tree, we hope to promote soil regeneration and improve nutritional health across Nagaland.
Collaboration and Advocacy
Reflecting on my collaboration with the NBCC in 2023, I was invited to address a Youth Leaders Retreat on September 26, 2023. During this meeting, Rev. Suhuto Chishi proposed the idea of planting Moringa trees in all associations under the NBCC as a project to care for Mother Earth and all living creatures. The proposal received overwhelming support from the Council of leaders, leading to the procurement of 24 kg of Moringa seeds, which translates to approximately 105,000 seeds for distribution to churches across Nagaland.
Celebrating Moringa and Earth Day
In April 2024, I was honored to receive a scholarship for in-person training in the “Moringa for Life” course in Sri Lanka. This intensive week-long training, facilitated by Mariko Gifford and Damayanti Lee, was a significant boost to my ongoing efforts. We celebrated National Moringa Day on April 18, 2024, inaugurated by the Agriculture Minister for Medicine, Shri Sisira Jayakoti, in Colombo. Later, we commemorated Earth Day by planting Moringa trees at a farm in Trincomalee, further solidifying our commitment to environmental stewardship.
A Ray of Hope for the Future
The initiative spearheaded by the NBCC has fostered community involvement and created a larger movement for soil regeneration and a sustainable environment. The Moringa campaign is not just about planting trees; it is about cultivating a culture of care for our planet and its resources. As we look ahead to May 18, 2024, when the Moringa seeds will be planted across Nagaland, we are filled with hope and determination.
Through this journey, we have learned that collective action can lead to significant change. The Moringa tree stands as a symbol of resilience, nourishment, and peace—values that are essential for our communities and our planet.
As we continue to advocate for the Moringa tree and peace education, we invite everyone to join us in this vital mission. Together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.
