The Moringa Movement: A Journey of Advocacy and Action in Southeast Asia
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a remarkable initiative took root in 2021, spearheaded by the Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE). The ambitious goal was to plant over 10,000 Moringa trees across Southeast Asia, a project that would not only promote environmental sustainability but also foster peace education. As an advisor from India, I had the privilege of being part of this transformative journey, collaborating with various organizations and communities to advocate for the Moringa tree and its myriad benefits.
The Genesis of the Campaign
The campaign was introduced to us by Dr. Leban Serto, who connected us with the GCPE, coordinated by Dr. Tony Jenkins since 1999. This was my first exposure to the Moringa tree, often referred to as the "miracle tree" due to its exceptional nutritional and medicinal properties. As I delved deeper into the advocacy work, I realized the profound significance of this plant—not just for its health benefits but also as a symbol of peace and community resilience.
Our local forum, "Natures, Pets Guardian, Nagaland (NPG)," became a vital platform for promoting the campaign. We reached out to churches, schools, colleges, NGOs, and community leaders, emphasizing the importance of growing Moringa trees and integrating peace education into our societal values. The response was overwhelming, and our initial goal of planting 10,000 trees quickly evolved into a much larger endeavor.
A Flourishing Initiative
In our first year, we exceeded expectations by planting over 50,000 Moringa trees across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and even reaching South Africa through collaboration with Mariana Price and the Shine Africa Campaign. The momentum continued into the second year, with another 50,000 trees planted, showcasing the collective effort and commitment of communities across the region.
A significant milestone in this journey was the involvement of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), which took the lead in expanding the initiative. Starting in January 2024, the NBCC set an ambitious target to grow 105,000 Moringa seeds across Nagaland. They procured 24 kg of high-quality seeds, which were distributed among various associations in the region. This grassroots effort is a testament to the leadership of Rev. Zelhou Keyho, General Secretary of NBCC, and Rev. Suhoto Chishi, Youth Secretary, who have been instrumental in mobilizing support for this cause.
Educating Communities and Promoting Sustainability
The NBCC’s initiative aims to educate local communities about the importance of the Moringa tree, not only as a source of nutrition but also as a means of soil regeneration and environmental sustainability. The vision is to encourage every household in Nagaland to plant at least one Moringa tree, fostering a culture of care for the Earth and its resources.
Reflecting on my collaboration with the NBCC in 2023, I was invited to address a youth leaders’ retreat meeting, where the proposal to plant Moringa trees across all associations under NBCC was presented. The proposal received unanimous support from the council of leaders, leading to the procurement of 24 kg of Moringa seeds, which will be distributed to churches across Nagaland for planting on May 18, 2024.
A Global Perspective: Training and Collaboration
In April 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in the "Moringa for Life" course in Sri Lanka, a groundbreaking training program facilitated by Mariko Gifford and Damayanti Lee. This intensive week-long course was a pivotal moment in my advocacy work, allowing me to connect with like-minded individuals and share best practices for Moringa cultivation.
The training coincided with the celebration of National Moringa Day in Sri Lanka, inaugurated by the Agriculture Minister for Medicine, Shri Sisira Jayakoti. We also celebrated World Earth Day by planting Moringa trees at a farm in Trincomalee, further solidifying our commitment to environmental stewardship.
A Ray of Hope for the Future
The initiative led by the NBCC has not only engaged local communities but has also created a ripple effect of participation and awareness regarding sustainable practices. The Moringa movement is more than just a campaign; it is a beacon of hope and faith in our collective ability to nurture the Earth and promote peace.
As we look forward to the planting day on May 18, 2024, we remain committed to our mission of fostering a healthier environment and a more peaceful society through the cultivation of Moringa trees. This journey has taught us that even in challenging times, we can come together to make a positive impact, one tree at a time.
