In a vibrant display of creativity and community engagement, the first edition of the Concours des Quartiers recently took place, showcasing innovative projects that aim to enhance local life in Saint-Martin. This competition not only highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of the island but also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and cultural heritage. Among the standout projects, three winners were recognized for their exceptional contributions: Eugène Duzant, Maria Vassileva, and Xavier Mire Minori.
1st Prize: Eugène Duzant and “Souali Aquaponics”
Eugène Duzant, representing CEPAC Caisse d’Epargne, took home the first prize for his groundbreaking project, “Souali Aquaponics.” This innovative system combines aquaculture and hydroponics, creating a sustainable method of food production that is particularly relevant for island communities like Saint-Martin.
Understanding Aquaponics
Aquaponics is a symbiotic system where fish farming and plant cultivation coexist. In this setup, fish are raised in tanks, and their waste provides an organic nutrient source for the plants grown in a closed-loop system. Aerobic bacteria play a crucial role, converting harmful ammonia from fish waste into nitrates that plants can absorb. The water, now purified, is recirculated back to the fish tanks, creating a sustainable cycle.
Duzant’s vision is to promote local food production, reducing reliance on imported goods and enhancing food security for the island’s residents. By harnessing the principles of aquaponics, he aims to empower the community to cultivate their own food sustainably.
A Word from Murielle Planques
Murielle Planques, the territorial director of CEPAC Iles du Nord, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the long-standing partnership between CEPAC and Initiative Saint Martin Active. She emphasized the importance of supporting innovative projects that contribute to the local economy and sustainability. “The Concours des Quartiers was a real and clear success,” she stated, reinforcing the commitment to fostering local entrepreneurship.
2nd Prize: Maria Vassileva and “Moringa Powder Farm SXM”
The second prize was awarded to Maria Vassileva for her project, “Moringa Powder Farm SXM.” Vassileva’s initiative focuses on cultivating Moringa oleifera, a plant renowned for its nutritional benefits and medicinal properties.
The Benefits of Moringa
Often referred to as the “Tree of Life,” Moringa is celebrated for its ability to purify the body, boost the immune system, and provide essential nutrients. Vassileva discovered the plant in 2008 and has since developed a passion for its potential. Her goal is to establish a local Moringa farm that caters to the community, with aspirations to expand into the Caribbean and international markets.
A Message from Julien Bataille
Julien Bataille, Director General of the CCISM, praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs. He noted that the competition encourages not only individual projects but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among local businesses. “We will ensure to always be a partner of Initiative Saint Martin Active for several decades to come!” he affirmed.
3rd Prize: Xavier Mire Minori and “Tell Me About Your Neighborhood”
Xavier Mire Minori received the third prize for his project, “Tell Me About Your Neighborhood.” This initiative aims to strengthen community ties by celebrating the unique histories and cultures of local neighborhoods.
Fostering Community Cohesion
Mire Minori’s project seeks to document and share the stories, traditions, and artistic practices of neighborhoods in Saint-Martin, particularly focusing on Sandy-Ground and Quartier d’Orléans. By engaging residents in storytelling and cultural exchange, the project aims to preserve the rich heritage of these areas and inspire younger generations to appreciate their roots.
Insights from Sylvie Feger
Sylvie Feger, ADECCO director at Howell Center, expressed her delight in supporting this project, emphasizing the importance of intergenerational dialogue. “Young people need their elders to understand their neighborhood,” she remarked, underscoring the value of preserving cultural traditions and fostering connections within the community.
Conclusion: A Bright Future for Saint-Martin
The Concours des Quartiers has successfully highlighted the innovative spirit and resilience of the Saint-Martin community. The projects presented not only address immediate local needs but also pave the way for a sustainable and culturally rich future. As the winners embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, they embody the potential of the island’s residents to create meaningful change through creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability.
With continued support from local organizations and a focus on community engagement, the future looks promising for Saint-Martin and its vibrant neighborhoods.
